In September of 2013, I had the opportunity to go for the first time to the USA, land of birth of many artists who had always inspired me. I landed in Chicago and very quickly fell in love with this city, its pulsatile population as well as the serenity of its lake, resembling an ocean.
Haunted by these ambivalent vibes, I settled for two days at Electrical Audio, the legendary studio designed and built by Steve Albini (Shellac guitarist, producer of Nirvana, Mogwai, etc.). In a research both spontaneous and orchestral, I produced a diptych of two sides of twelve minutes each, recording all the instruments one by one (piano, drums, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer, Mellotron) and all the vocals on a 16 tracks analog tape, without ever resorting to any computer or other digital equipment. Then Bob Weston (Shellac bassist) in his studio Chicago Mastering Service cut the vinyl lacquers directly from my two track master tape, still without any digital processing.
And as the theme of this disc revolved around my visit of Chicago, I also had to make the artwork there. I met the beautiful Christina, whose mother is "native American" and whose tattoos were particularly apropos. Watching the illuminated shores of her native Michigan on the other side of the lake of the same name, I guess she was wondering about the same things I did, photographing her. Who's the angel? Who's the demon? Will this journey last forever?
